Look I’m not gonna pretend I have this all figured out. Last year we did this whole family getaway planning thing where I thought “hey let’s drive to the Smoky Mountains it’ll be cheap and pretty” and then gas prices spiked right before we left and I was sweating bullets at every fill-up. We still went though. Packed way too much junk food (those giant bags of Doritos lasted like 4 hours), argued over music the whole way (my wife hates my 90s rock playlist), and somehow ended up having the best time at Cades Cove watching deer just chill while the kids lost their minds.
Why Family Getaway Planning Feels Impossible Sometimes
honestly half the time i just wanna book the first all-inclusive thing i see and call it a day but then i remember flying with two kids under 10 is basically asking for public humiliation. so we stick to driving. pros: cheaper, flexible stops, can blast ac when someone’s carsick. cons: 12 hours in a minivan with “are we there yet” on repeat.
here’s what i’ve actually learned the hard way:
- budget first or cry later — we started using this dumb app called YNAB (you need a budget) and it kinda works? i put in gas, food, lodging, “emergency ice cream” line item. last trip we went $200 over because of surprise go-karts but whatever.
- get everyone to vote — we do a family meeting (sounds fancy, it’s really just pizza night) and everyone picks one must-have. my daughter wanted a pool, son wanted hiking, wife wanted no cooking. we found a cabin with all three. miracle.
- timing is everything — avoid july 4th weekend unless you hate crowds and high prices. we tried once. never again. shoulder season like late may or early september is gold.

For some solid inspo check out this national parks list from the NPS site because we basically lived off their maps: https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/family-friendly.htm

My Biggest Family Getaway Planning Fails (So You Don’t Repeat Them)
- Forgot the car charger. Phones died day 2. Kids rioted.
- Booked a “pet-friendly” Airbnb then realized our dog hates car rides more than we thought. Had to board him last minute. expensive.
- Thought “we’ll wing meals” — ended up spending $80 on one Cracker Barrel breakfast because everyone was hangry.
lesson: overpack chargers, book pet stuff early if needed, and have at least 3 restaurant gift cards ready.
Packing Hacks That Kinda Work for Us
- ziploc bags for everything. seriously. snacks, wet wipes, random cords.
- one “boredom buster” backpack per kid with coloring books, small toys, headphones.
- cooler with actual ice packs not just frozen water bottles (they melt too fast).
- always throw in rain ponchos. we got caught in a storm in Tennessee and looked like drowned rats but laughed about it later.
oh and pro tip: download offline spotify playlists BEFORE you lose signal. we learned that in the middle of nowhere west virginia.
